How to Achieve Short Emo Haircuts?
The newest trend in funky, fashionable, punk rock hair is called the Emo style. While this motley trend of hairstyles has been around for decades, it has re-emerged and has been dubbed the popular Emo style. Popular bands such as the Monkeys, The Beatles and even fashions most popular icon and super model Twiggy have rocked variations this style long before it adopted its new name. Dr. Spock and the Star Trek Voyager crew also have sported a variation of this style during their journey in to outer space. To achieve this popular punk rock hairstyle you must first be open to sporting 'boy short' or choppy long layers along the parameter of your hair. The sides and back of your hair should be cut no longer than three inches from the scalp for boy short, and wispy chops for longer layered Emo. Ask your stylist or barber to use a number four guard if clipper cutting. Using the occipital bone, and temporal region as your guide, cut these areas three inches short for boy short (you can always take more off, but you can not put it back on). From the occipital and temporal region on up, your hair should be layered up to the crown of your head using (approximately a 45 to 60 degree elevation depending on the length desired), over directing the layers and leaving the forehead region the longest. The bang area should be cut using the bridge of the nose as a guide, this is what gives 'attitude' to the Emo cut. Razor cutting the crown region of the hair as well as the bang is ideal to achieving this 'choppy' style, although skilled, precision scissor cutting techniques and texturizing can be highly effective as well.
To put a funky twist on the popular Emo style, you may add trendy, natural or non natural hair colors, particularly to the tips of the hair, and the longest layers on the forehead and crown region of the hair. Reds, purples, blues, greens and yellows are all colors that 'pop' and makes this haircut stand out from the rest. You may deviate and use your favorite colors, or whatever colors make you feel fashionable and sexy. There is no rhyme or reason to the color scheme. Use one color, no color, or a variation of colors. Permanent hair colors can be used, but must be touched up when new growth of the hair emerges. These colors are also more damaging on the hair because hydrogen peroxide must be used to remove your natural color in order for your new color to take. Be sure to perform a skin patch test before applying permanent hair colors. Using the elbow crease in your arm, apply a dime size amount of color. Allow to sit for 24 hours. If this area becomes red, swollen or irritated, then DO NOT USE. You may be allergic, and this can cause a serious allergic reaction if applied to your scalp. Try semi permanent or temporary colors instead. Semi permanent colors are less damaging to the hair, however they have a tendency to wash out gradually every time the hair is shampooed. Temporary colors sometimes have the tendency to stain the hair, but the majority of color will wash out with your next shampoo. This method of coloring is the least damaging to the hair, allows the most flexibility, and is practically harmless. The majority of the hair should be colored in a warm tone to help enhance the colors of your choice that are added to your hair.
